3 Types of Commercial Roofs
Rubber or EPDM
EPDM is a durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer). This product is typically used on buildings with little slope or pitch. The two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are sourced from oil and gas. It comes in a few different colors with black being the most popular. Installation methods include fully adhered, mechanically attached, and ballasted. Seams are sealed with a special tape and liquid adhesives.
Thermoplastic polyolefin are a single-ply membrane is used commercial roof applications. Demand for heat-reflective and energy conservation has made this product become very popular. TPO membranes provide resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure. Read GAF's independent study about TPO roofing, here.
PVC offers a single-ply, flat or low pitched roofing solution for commercial applications. PVC or Polyvinyl Choride has been used since the 1960's. Made of flexible UV-resistant thermoplastic material.
PVC membrane roofing is used on flat or low sloped roofs, since conventional shingles only work on sloped roofs. One type of flat roofing membrane is called PVC or polyvinyl chloride, and it has been commonly used since the 1960s. Since this a flexible material it can be customized to neatly fit any shape of roof. Since it is prefabricated and fire safe, the material is cost effective and withstands climate changes common in Kentucky. PVC roofs should be inspected about every six months. The life expectancy is 15-20 years.
PVC roofing is one kind of single ply roofing, which means it consists of one layer manufactured in a factory. A PVC roofing membrane is made of thick, flexible UV-resistant thermoplastic material; it may also contain polyester or fiberglass, resins, pigments, plasticizers and other chemicals. The thickness of the roofing membrane varies by manufacturer.
